A True Harmony Minute on Parabens - What are They? by Jacqueline Gillam

A True Harmony Minute on Parabens

Hello! I’m Jacqueline Gillam, Licensed Aesthetician at the Center for True Harmony Wellness & Medicine. Here’s some information on Parabens: What are They?

Parabens are synthetically created chemicals used as preservatives in many cosmetic and beauty products today.  They are found in most lotions, cleansers, scrubs, liquid and powder foundations, shampoos, hand soaps, and many, many more products.   They are so widely used because of their antibacterial and fungicidal properties and they help extend product shelf life.  However, parabens have become a controversial ingredient because of their effects on the body.

When we use products on our skin, they are absorbed directly into our bloodstream.  Once parabens are in our bloodstream they mimic estrogen.  When we have a surplus of estrogen in the body we are at a higher risk for reproductive cancers, such as breast cancer and uterine cancer.  In addition, several studies have shown high levels of paraben in breast cancer tumors.

You can find products that don’t have parabens in them at many health food stores.  Here at True Harmony, I have developed a line of facial cleansing products that are free of harsh chemicals, including parabens.  You can check out the “Botanical” line of products on our facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/pages/Center-for-True-Harmony-Wellness-and-Medicine/294918794384?ref=search&sid=565244139.2780184087..1
