Midwifery Q & A

What is midwifery?

Midwives are trained health professionals who assist mothers through labor, delivery, and after childbirth. Our midwives are ideal for the healthy mother who hasn’t had a complicated pregnancy. They provide a safe and supportive birth setting at both Banner Desert and Banner Ocotillo Medical Center.

The midwifery model of care reflects a philosophy that prefers to alleviate problems or conditions through naturopathy and alternative approaches, rather than interventions based on allopathic, or Western, medicine. Pregnancy and childbirth are treated as normal and natural life processes.

All midwives have extensive education in childbirth and passed a national exam. Our midwife has a vast amount of experience and provides top-notch care and attention to every mother and baby.

Why might I want to choose a midwife?

When choosing a midwife, what really matters is your birthing preference. Midwives encourage natural childbirth as much as possible and attempt to avoid procedures such as episiotomies, fetal monitoring, and labor induction, but they don’t hesitate to provide conventional medical attention when necessary.

Like an OB/GYN, Our midwife can skillfully delivery your baby. Different from the average OB/GYN, she provides a deep level of emotional, medical, and social support.

What services does a midwife provide?

Our midwife guides mothers through all of the phases of childbirth, from labor to post-delivery. They provide a multitude of services reflective of the midwifery model of care and help make your childbirth experience go as smoothly as possible. Your midwife can:

  • Discuss family planning and create a preconception plan
  • Provide guidance on diet, exercise, and taking medications during your pregnancy
  • Monitor and support your physical and mental well-being
  • Conduct prenatal exams and order necessary tests
  • Provide education about pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn care
  • Explore birthing options in various settings (home, birthing center, hospital)
  • Work with you to create a birth plan
  • Provide you with medical and emotional support during labor
  • Deliver your baby
  • Admit and discharge you from the hospital or birthing center
  • Make referrals to doctors when needed

Our midwife has a close relationship with your obstetrician and the entire team at Center for True Harmony Wellness & Medicine and calls on their expertise as needed. This premium blend of Midwife OB care provides the benefits of modern medicine and alternative options.
